As an Australian living in Thailand the banking situation here is hopeless for foreigners, No interest on deposits in banks, No Debit cards or credit cards, if you are real lucky all you get is a savings A/C with ATM card. I have some internet businesses from which I regularly receive US dollar checks. It takes more than a month to clear the checks from my country. Now that I have opened a US Dollar account, I can save both time and money by banking the checks directly into the account. I can also transfer funds to my account from Paypal now. Before this, there was no way for me to withdraw funds since Paypal doesn't allow withdrawals to my local bank accounts here.
